California permit test: lanes, passing and turns
Lane lines tell you where you may move. Before any move: check mirrors, look over your shoulder, signal.
Key rules
- Double solid yellow: no passing. You may cross only to turn left, for example into a driveway, or to make a legal U-turn. (CVC §21460)
- Broken yellow line on your side of a double line: you may pass when it is safe. Double solid white lines: do not cross. (CVC §21460)
- Center left-turn lane: use it only to start or finish a left turn or U-turn, and for no more than 200 feet. (CVC §21460.5)
